“Sorry Miss,” the man on the computer said. “I sent the shoes you ordered. But something happened--”
“I want my money back. My son needs those soccer shoes,” David’s mom said.
David leaned toward the computer. “Does your TV say, ‘Shipping Truck Hits Flood Wall’?” David’s heart pounded. “Is the driver hurt? The wall burst! Got to go!”
Bruno blasted into the trash David took out earlier. “Wait. I need to send you the RocBot quest. The quest is not even that direction,” David laughed. Bruno blasted away. He reached blinding speed in an instant.
“Hi!” David shouted over Cheng’s music on video chat. “Up for an adventure? A guy’s trapped and a flood’s coming.”
“Fine. Only if you watch this video. It’s me and Kong dancing for China’s Beat Rockers Live,” Cheng answered. David watched, smiled, and tried to reach Ashanti.
Bruno thought, I’m going to save the driver all by myself! Too bad David’s mom will never know. I’m not just a toy. “Whoa, bad landing,” Bruno said after bowling over a family.
“Oh my! Is that a guy with a jetpack?” a mom asked a dad.
“It’s a RocBot!” a child told a mom and a dad.
Bruno lifted rock after rock off the truck. They felt like tiny stones. “David, look at me!” He yanked the door off. Bruno banged the driver’s head while pulling him out.
The driver looked at Bruno. More rocks were piling around the truck. “My…” The driver choked up. “My dog. He’s still in the truck!”
Bruno reached through the rocks. He could not feel the dog. His heart sank. The dog cried and shook. I can’t move the truck or the rocks. Rocks would fall on the dog. “I need Imara. She could fit.”
“Race you to reach Ashanti, David,” Cheng teased.
Bruno heard the crowd roar as another RocBot arrived. “Kong, what took you? If only you were Imara’s size. You’d be my best friend right now,” Bruno joked. The dog cried. Fear came into Bruno’s and Kong’s eyes.
Ashanti said, “Imara, I’m back from Math Club. Got your message. Sure, I’ll come home and help you mop floors. Then, my driver will take me to Science Club. Bye.”
David called seconds later. “I’m so happy I got a hold of you. A dog needs help. Imara is the one RocBot small enough.”
“Imara will love to help! She is so sick of cleaning. Send me her quest.”
Imara flew from Africa. In seconds, she arrived in the United States. She fit between the rocks and into the truck. Imara felt the truck shake. Falling rocks made her noise sensors pound. The crowd gasped.
“My puppy!” the driver cried.
David said, “Kong, keep people away from the rocks. Dance for the crowd.” Kong lifted his chin and danced. Bruno jumped to the beat.
“Hi puppy. Follow me. Um…guys…this puppy looks terrified. He’s not coming out,” Imara said.
“I’m searching the Internet…for what makes dogs calm down,” Cheng said.
Imara rolled her eyes. “Really?” She turned on her video display. “Bruno, use your camera. Have the driver and dog talk.”
The driver sobbed. “Here puppy. Follow the robot to me.” The dog tipped his head and stood up.
Imara smiled. The puppy was following her to the driver. The driver hugged his dog. The dog licked the driver’s face. Imara cried happy tears and thought, That’s a way better use of my skills than cleaning.
“Great job Team RocBot!” David said.
More rocks fell. Water rushed in and the flood waters deepened.
Cheng smoothed his hair and straightened his hat. “I studied a report from Kong’s computer. The floodwall is near a town and will soon--”
“Cheng! What are you still doing up?” Cheng’s father shouted from another room.
“Playing with my robot!” Cheng shouted. He was sending the report to Bruno and Imara. Cheng eyed David and Ashanti. “The floodwall will soon burst. And cause a huge flood.” David and Ashanti looked alarmed.
Cheng watched Ashanti smile and look down. “Ashanti, you look like you’re up to something. Come on. Tell us what’s up.”
“I sent a new floodwall idea to the RocBots. I’m not sure if it will work. But if the idea does work...it will save the town,” Ashanti whispered.
“You’re great. The idea will work,” David whispered to a red-faced Ashanti.
Kong said, “I agree. Great idea! We will block the water with something huge first.”
Bruno picked up a giant rock. This rock is hard to hold. But I can do it! We will save the day! The sharp, hard rock scraped his hands. The rock slipped. He moved under the rock and seized it tighter. I better pay more attention.
Bruno reached the flooded area. The rock slipped and its weight disappeared. “SPLASH!” Bruno’s mouth fell open. The crowd gasped. The huge waves faded away. “It worked!” Bruno said. The crowd calmed down. “But a little water is still leaking in. Team RocBot, we have to get the floodwall quick.”
Ashanti watched Cheng. He bobbed his head to the beat of his music. He said, “Oh yeah! Here are locations where we might get a floodwall. Ashanti, use the computer Earth maps and cameras. See which places have the floodwall we need. Team RocBot! Woo!”
Ashanti flowed from screen to screen on her computer. “I found one! RocBots, go to this location! Cheng, turn up that song!”
The RocBots blazed to pick up the floodwall. They came back in an instant. The RocBots dropped the floodwall into place.
David leaned toward his computer. The driver said, “RocBots, you’re heroes.” The RocBots hugged each other and smiled. The crowd cheered. “How can I thank you and your team?” the driver asked.
Imara said, “We’re glad everyone is safe. And I really needed something more exciting than cleaning. Kong, everyone says your dancing was cool. You could win a contest.”
Bruno whispered in the driver’s ear. The driver walked to the truck. He smiled and handed Bruno a box. “Your friend David’s soccer shoes survived the flood.” David’s eyes widened. And then he smiled.
